What Is a Child-Resistant Cap?
A Child Resistant Cap (also called a Child Proof Cap) is a special type of bottle or container closure designed to prevent young children from opening it, while still being accessible to most adults.

How Does It Work?
Most child-resistant caps require a two‑step or coordinated motion to open, such as:
● Push down while turning (common on medicine bottles)
● Squeeze the sides while turning
● Align arrows or indicators before lifting or twisting
These mechanisms take advantage of the fact that young children typically lack the strength, dexterity, or understanding to perform two simultaneous movements.

Where Are They Used?
Child-resistant caps are legally required in many countries (e.g., the US – Poison Prevention Packaging Act) for products such as:
● Prescription and over‑the‑counter medications
● Vitamins and dietary supplements (especially those containing iron)
● Household chemicals (e.g., bleach, detergents, antifreeze)
● Pesticides and some personal care products

Are They Truly “Child-Proof”?
No cap is 100% child-proof, but childresistant caps significantly reduce the risk of accidental poisoning. They are rigorously tested according to standards like 16 CFR § 1700 (US) or ISO 8317 (international). A cap passes if at least 85% of children under 51 months fail to open it within 5 minutes, while 90% of adults can open it successfully.

Important Note: Senior-Friendly Designs
Some child-resistant caps can be difficult for elderly or arthritic adults to open. Many modern closures offer “child-resistant & senior-friendly” options (e.g., larger grips, compliant materials, or push-and-turn designs with better torque control).
Example sentence:
“Always close the medicine bottle with its child-resistant cap and keep it out of children’s sight and reach.”
